Three for the road: Cold Spring

After spending a few hours wandering up and down the hill that is Cold Spring’s Main Street, you’re going to get hungry. Chances are you’ll be craving a restaurant as charming as the town itself. We have some options for you, from wallet-friendly to splurge-worthy. This week’s Three For The Road includes a casual neighborhood spot, a sweet French bistro and an historic inn with river views.

Hudson House River Inn

Hudson House River Inn

2 Main St. - Cold Spring
845-265-9355

If you love all things historic and stately and have come to Cold Spring after touring West Point and stopping by Boscobel, the River Room at the Hudson House River Inn is the place for you. The Hudson House is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been functioning as a hotel since 1832. The River Room boasts incredible views of the Hudson, with its windows a mere 100 feet from the river. There are many options on the menu, but steak steals the show. The prime, dry aged Western cuts are served on heated plates to ensure they stay warm throughout the meal. Entrees hover around $30, but between the wine list, appetizers and sides, it would be easy to run up the bill.

Le Bouchon

76 Main St. - Cold Spring
845-265-7676

Le Bouchon is the perfect date spot. It’s a French Bistro, so it has that certain charm. There are options for dining outdoors, on the brightly painted front patio that overlooks Main Street or in the backyard garden. Inside there is flattering lighting, hardwood floors and tables tucked away for an intimate setting. It is small enough that it feels like a lovely secret, nice enough that it feels special, and relaxed enough that couples can linger over coffee without feeling rushed. Wrap up an extra order of frites and munch on them while walking down Main Street to the park by the river. It's not Paris, but it's still romantic.

Foundry Cafe

Foundry Cafe

55 Main St. - Cold Spring
845-265-4504

We’re just suckers for restaurants where reading the paper isn’t rude. The Foundry Café is lovably quirky, without a hint of insincerity. The wait staff calls people, “Hon,” and the specials board has messages like, “For the love of God and Mike: NO CELL PHONES!” Their holiday parties have become a town tradition. Coffee comes in a bottomless mug, and the cheesecake is the stuff of dreams, with flavors changing regularly. Breakfast and lunch are the only meals served at Foundry Café, so show up before 3 p.m. or you will miss the best place in Cold Spring to grab a bite for under $10.
