A decade's worth of songs exploring a national tragedy
In the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, it seemed like what Americans wanted to do more than anything else (besides kick some terrorist butt) was get together and sing. One tribute concert after another sprang up: "America: A Tribute to Heroes," "The Concert for New York City," "United We Stand." Now that the 10th anniversary of 9/11 is approaching, maybe it's time for America to once again put aside its ideological differences and lift up its collective voice in song.
Or, if you're not in the mood for singing, how's about a nice, juicy, rancorous debate over which of the 22 9/11-themed songs in this gallery truly rises to the magnitude of the occasion? Alrighty then—rancorous debate it is! To quote the great sage Toby Keith, "It's the American way."
But seriously, though, we hope that whatever your political persuasion, or however 9/11 affected you personally, you'll find a few songs in this list that help you reflect on that darkest of days.—Andy Hermann, Metromix
