The Strokes
It's been five years since we last heard anything from the Strokes, the original garage-rock revivalists whose scrappy sound and effortlessly cool image launched a thousand vintage T-shirt-clad hipster bands whose names started with "The." In the years since they were last active (apart from myriad solo projects), the Strokes sound fell out of fashion, and it began to feel like their place in rock history had been overhyped. But on April Fool's Day 2011, the joke was on the nay-sayers. Reunited behind an acclaimed comeback album, "Angles," all five original Strokers rocked out Madison Square Garden in front of the biggest hometown crowd of their career. They ripped through much of their 2001 debut "Is This It," trotted out Elvis Costello for a version of new song "Taken for a Fool," and preened like the rock stars they've become.
