A wildly exuberant, half-naked return by the Jersey glam punks
"If this is the first time you've seen My Chem and you're a boy, take off your shirt." Well, hellllloooooo there, Gerard Way! In the four years since the New Jersey rockers released "The Black Parade," the music world has shifted away from punk and emo. But so has My Chemical Romance—their new record, "Danger Days," is as much '70s glam rock as it is New Wave and power pop. But whatever the labels, MCR deliver the anthems with lightning bolts of energy and, well, the rock'n'roll spirit that would drive young men to go topless.
Last night at Roseland, the new stuff ("Na Na Na Na....," "Sing") held up well, but it was the older tracks like "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" and "Welcome to the Black Parade" that delivered ear-shattering, half-naked singalongs. The Gaslight Anthem (love their Springsteen-esque punk, but they spent waaaaay too much time on stage musing about New Jersey) and Fifteen Fleeting opened. —Kirk Miller
