Previewing 33 of late 2011's most anticipated new releases
This fall, we're gonna rock! It's been years since so many major rock acts have released new music in a single season: Bush, Staind, Blink-182, Nickelback, Jane's Addiction, Wilco, Korn, Evanescence and New Found Glory all have albums due out in the next three months, as do three-quarters of heavy metal's "Big 4" (Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax). Even Coldplay seem to be rockin' out harder than usual on their latest. Add to that comeback albums by oldies rock acts Alice Cooper and Blondie, plus a 20th anniversary reissue of Nirvana's "Nevermind" and a Pearl Jam documentary soundtrack, and it's a veritable all-you-can-eat buffet of rock-itude.
The likelier scenario, however, is that most of the above-mentioned releases (except the commercially bulletproof Coldplay and Nickelback) will under-perform compared to country, pop and hip-hop releases from artists like Lady Antebellum, Kelly Clarkson, Drake and Young Jeezy. But who knows? Maybe 2011 will be remembered as the year that rock 'n' roll got its groove back.—Andy Hermann, Metromix
