HBO has pulled the plug on Enlightened, a quirky comedy starring Laura Dern, after two low-rated seasons.

Though audience levels are less important to the pay-cable network, the series, starring Dern as Amy Jellicoe, an executive who has a spiritual re-awakening after a nervous breakdown, never clicked with viewers.

The second-season finale on March 3 drew just 185,000 to its initial airing on Sunday, less than a third of the audience for that night's episode of its companion series, Girls, which has been renewed for a third season. But Dern won a 2012 Golden Globe Award for her performance. Creator, writer and executive producer Mike White co-starred as a co-worker.

"It was a very difficult decision," the network said in a statement. "We're proud of the show and we look forward to working with Mike White and Laura Dern in the future.
