There are plenty of bars where you can dance to music in downtown White Plains, but few of them have the feel of a club, maybe because there are only so many times you can hear "Living On A Prayer" on the digital jukebox. One of the WP bars that comes closest to matching the NYC club vibe at night is SoMa 107, a chic restaurant by day and hip haven for DJs by night.
Metromix Hudson Valley gives you the Lowdown of this venture of Gene Lum, whose family also owns Lum Yen in Mamaroneck.
Vibe: Chameleon-like in its approach, SoMa during business hours is a sleek restaurant showcasing modern, curved furniture accentuated by white and earth tones. But once enough arugula salad appetizers and mahi fish taco entrees have been ordered on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the smooth furniture is packed away to make way for the club crowd.
Top music mixologists, including Jonathan Peters and DJ Serg, headline SoMa to bring the people to their feet and to the dance floor, which gets busiest after midnight. Those sitting in plush bottle-service booths have front-row seats to the show, which might just include a decked-out dancer sporting a skin-tight leopard pattern from hood to toe.
Attire: The bouncers, DJs and bartenders treat the place like a club at night, and so do the patrons. You'll see a lot of muscle-bound guys sporting snug shirts and tanks, giving you free tickets to the "gun show." As many ladies who break out slinky, colorful ensembles are matched by another contingent of women rockin' the little black dresses. People on the dance floor seem to be taking advantage of their gym memberships; a few appear never to leave the gym, except to party at SoMa.
Pick me up: As you might expect with the club scene, there are factions of women and men trying to hook up by night's end, or perhaps during a key song late on the dark dancefloor. Sure, you'll see your share of cute couples, but with intense beats throbbing through well-calibrated speaker systems, it's really about the singles scene at SoMa.
If your growling stomach could use a pick-me-up, the kitchen's open until 10 from Monday through Wednesday, until midnight from Thursday through Saturday, and until 9 on Sundays.
Entertainment: DJs are pretty much the top billing on prime nights for partying, but you can also stop by SoMa for happy hour specials weeknights from 5 to 7 p.m., when you can get signature cocktails, martinis and wines of the week for $7, beers for $5 and complemetary appetizers.
