Maybe "Saturday Night Live" star Andy Samberg was onto something with his song when he bragged "I'm On A Boat." Sitting between marinas at the Newburgh waterfront is Gully’s, a firmly docked boat that rocks most nights from spring to fall. The floating fiesta has been afloat on the Hudson for more than 20 years. Live bands rock the boat six nights a week and admission is always free.
Vibe: It’s not a sports bar or martini bar and, despite its proximity to the water, it’s definitely not a dive bar. Gully’s is a music bar, bringing in some of the best original and cover bands in the area.
Gully’s has a beautiful view that bar manager Kevin Gagliano says draws people in. “You get swept in as soon as you walk in the door," he adds. "It’s an escape.”
Attire: All types of people hit up Gully’s during the summer season and the no-pretense dress code keeps things simple. Shirt and shoes are a must. Besides that, wear anything you want, although it's smart to bring a jacket on some of the chillier nights if you feel like venturing to the outside deck or just to enjoy the sights. Don’t bother with a bathing suit because if you feel inclined to jump off the side into the water, the Coast Guard will be there to pick you up (and take you somewhere not as nice).
Have in hand: In addition to Gully’s selection of bottled beers, Bud, Bud Light, Coors, Sam Adams, Sam Adams Summer Ale, Killians, Blue Moon and Molson are on tap. The most popular mixed drinks are of the frozen variety. Check out the margarita, piña colada and the popular $10 Rumrunner.
The kitchen is open daily until 10 p.m., so snack on some Nachos Grande, which can feed four for $9.95. The menu also includes steamed clams, fried calamari, burgers, fries, steaks and lobster.
Entertainment: Gagliano says he picks bands to perform at Gully's after he watches them live. Gigging routinely at Gully's are Stuck in a Decade, Live Society, Nuts in a Blender, Dr. Jah and the Love Prophets, CloudNYne and more. And since there's no cover charge, the entertainment is always free!
