Born and raised in nearby Middletown, Jen Mactas has seen her share of fun stuff at Jester's, the popular bar in the middle of The Castle amusement park in Chester: Crazy '80s karaoke, hilarious attempts at pick-up lines and showboating customers.
Graduating from York College with a degree in business administration, the 23-year-old recently took up bartending. Future career aspirations include landing a high-profile career in human resources and/or "to make six figures." In the meantime, she's behind the bar, cracking jokes and keeping drinkers on their toes — or at least their bar stools.
What's the funniest thing that's ever happened at the bar?
Last week there was a group of people that were all dressed up (like it was) the '80s and they were hard-core. Every song they song they song was from the '80s. A guy had a salmon-colored blazer on and then a tie, and then by the end of the night, he took off his shirt and his jacket and just had on his tie with nothing underneath (on top). And he got on the bar and started dancing.
Have you ever gone home with a customer?
Hell no.
Which celebrity would you most love to serve and what would you serve him/her?
Justin Timberlake and sex on the beach.
What does somebody have to do to get a free drink around here?
Pay for it!
What drink will have you calling a cab home?
Grey Goose and orange juice. It's the acid that always gets me on the way down.
What's the worst pick-up line you've ever heard?
"Is that Windex (on your) pants, because I can just see myself in them." Just doesn't work. Not at all.
What's the largest cash tip you've ever gotten?
I get a lot of cash tips that are like $5 on an $8 shot. Those are nice.
What alcohol will you absolutely not drink?
Jager. It tastes like licorice and I hate licorice. Yuck.
What made you become a bartender?
I always wanted to be a bartender. Ever since I was younger, it was just one of my goals.
Do you have any other jobs, aside from bartending?
I sell pickles at a flea market and I'm an HR assistant.
Do you go to any other bars?
Yeah, I go to Empty Bottle, (Olde) Erie ....
Is there a drink that makes you cringe when it's order?
A White Russian, because milk just should not go with alcohol! (Laughs.)
Have you ever had any ridiculous or insane customers?
I wouldn't say insane — he was just over-the-top friendly — he gave us air compressors and pictures of his boat but with pictures of other girls on them.
What’s your secret to curing a hangover?
Lots and lots of sleep, and chicken broth.
What's the worst fake ID you've ever seen?
I haven't seen any yet. None.
What's one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?
My hips are double-jointed. (Laughs.)
Do you have a signature drink?
I like Malibu Bay Breeze. That's my favorite.
